South Sudan
United Nations under-secretary-general for peacekeeping operations, Herve Ladsous, on Wednesday urged the UN Security Council to strengthen the mandate for the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.
The under-secretary-general’s proposed for the Mission to be extended until the end of August given the current unstable security situation in the country.
The current UNMISS mandate will expire on July 31.
Herve Ladsous said that although the situation in South Sudan seemed to calm after the ceasefire was declared on July 11, the possibility of further fighting still exists as troops remain stationed in Juba and some other areas.
He urged the security council to place an arms embargo on the country with targeted sanctions on leaders and commanders blocking the implementation of the peace accord.
Some 272 people, including 33 civilians, have died in recent clashes between government and opposition forces.
